Put on VFC

Buy to open the Nov. 18, 2016 put on VFC with a strike price of $62.50 at $2.60 or lower. Symbol (VFC161118P62.5)

We are placing our second option trade on VFC. (Last month we bought and sold a VFC put for a 50% gain in less than two days.)

This trade may be held for as long as one or two months as news comes out regarding the shape of VFC’s third quarter, which I expect to be horrible.

As expected, second quarter earnings were disappointing. However management maintained its full year guidance, expectations that blindly ignore the unraveling of VFC’s wholesale business.

  • In the second quarter VFC’s wholesale business (mostly to department and sports stores) dropped 5.6%, a worse showing than the 2.6% decline in the previous quarter. Wholesale revenue makes up 73% of sales.
  • Macy’s, one of VFC’s core customers, just announced the closing of another 100 stores due to wretched performance of its base business.
  • Sports Authority, who filed for bankruptcy in March, will close all of its 450 stores, stores that VFC usually filled with The North Face clothing each fall.
  • Profits for the Outdoor business which includes The North Face, declined 9% in the second quarter despite a 2% gain in sales. This is indicative of a company offering discounts to encourage customers to take on inventory.
  • In order to just reach its annual estimate of 3.5% revenue growth, VFC will need to boost sales 7% in the second half of the year, an unlikely rate based on the poor sell through of its products last year. Wholesale customers base ordering patterns off of last year’s sales.
  • In addition, management’s goal of 50 basis point annual profit margin improvement assumes a huge improvement (100 basis points) in second half margins. VFC has not been able to increase these margins for the past 6 quarters and offered no plan for reaching this goal.
  • VFC reports third quarter earnings on or around October 23. It has already told investors that this year will be “back end weighted” meaning most of earnings will fall in the December quarter. As we approach the third quarter release we will consider rolling into the January puts.

Thank you Linda,
I am excited about this Put since it worked so well on the previous trade. I entered my trade with TOS and it was executed at 2.35.
Hope you enjoyed your trip to “the old sod”

Hi Linda, I have a question that would apply directly to the VFC Option trade or in general to any put option. Lets say in connection with the VFC 62.50 Put the underlying stock went down to the same price as the stock at 62.50 that would be a break even price. Therefore is it our goal for the underlying to be below 62.50 to make a profit?
Thanks always learning on Options

Hi Jon,
When I recommend a put purchase, especially a longer term one like this, I am definitely looking for the stock to drop below the strike. As time passes, options lose their value so unless the stock drops significantly many expire worthless. In the shorter term extreme volatility will also boost option prices. My super bear target for VFC is the low 40’s so this bet is based on the stock dropping way below the 62.50 strike.
Best,
Linda

While I did once have a “Swissy” I named Eiger; thats my only connection with the North Face. Wow maybe I did not read the goal before. This makes me Glad I purchased more yesterday, not only that but at 2.20.
The Ichimoku Cloud predicts a small drop in mid September but guess I will wait. This sounds great to me. This will improve an election year that has been dreadful in terms of returns!
Thanks,

Very Fine Chocolate is now 61.63 for the stock. Our Put is now ITM. It has plenty of time value, and our strike expires in November [as you know of course]. Sorry for tedious questions, but I am assuming giving time value, and date of expiration, we have no worries on getting assigned in the near future?
Can you confirm please . Sorry but I understand that EDUCO using the latin phrase meaning leading out of darkness can be trying. However I am still a student is how I look at it.
Thanks so much,
Jon D

Jon,
Please ask away! A long position in an option cannot be assigned or exercised without your instruction. If you have sold short a put or call, there is a risk that the long holder of the option (the other side of the trade) can choose to exercise the option at which time your option would be assigned. All of our option trades in PCA have been long put positions with no risk of assignment.
Best,
Linda
