Sell SAIA Calls for a 51% Gain

SAIA is trading higher today on the backs of strong results from competitor Old Dominion Freight (NSDQ: ODFL). Although SAIA may trade higher when it reports tomorrow morning, the group has been choppy with some truckers missing earnings based on driver shortages.

I’d rather take a 51% one month gain and come back later for another round.

Sell to close the December 15, 2017, call on SAIA Inc. (SAIA) with a strike price of $60 at $5.00 or higher. Symbol (SAIA171215C60)

The bullish trade on the trucking group was a huge success. This SAIA 51% gain follows an 82% gain in the Old Dominion calls and a 37% gain on the Werner calls.

Please drop me a line and let me know how this trade worked out for you, perhaps by taking this quick survey.

There is a huge difference between the Bid and Ask, but I am seeing $3.90 – $4.00. I put in a Limit order for $5.00 but not likely to go today. Advice?

I should say Thoughts? Realize you can’t give specific advice.

The spread between the bid and ask is typically so much wider than for stock trades and especially for some of the names where the volume is light. The stops I recommend are usually right down the middle of the bid and ask, which I think is the best way to place the trade. Many subscribers with a lot of options trading experience place a bid or ask right in the middle and have decent success with getting filled.

FYI SAIA will report earnings this morning so I’ll give an update on the results in a bit.

Best,
Linda

Thanks, Linda. I took a deep breath and let the limit order ride yesterday. It was filled at $5 at Fidelity around 11:00 this morning. Thanks!

Hello subscribers,
For those of you who still own the SAIA calls: The company reported a good quarter this morning, revenue and earnings in line with estimates despite some disruptions from the hurricanes. The company’s call begins at 10 AM. Guidance from management about future earnings will be the key to the stock moving up.
Best,
Linda

9/7/17 bought to open SAIA December $60 calls for $3.44
immediately set a sell order for $7 gtc
received your sell guidance and info on earnings call, but held my breath and waited until after the call
10/30/17 sell order was triggered and sold to close SAIA December $60 calls for $7.40 automatically. Guess I got lucky

Super Big thank you for your insight. Can’t wait for more.

John,
Yes, the quarter was weak in their retail stores. Warm weather and lousy boot sales (which do go hand in hand) are the culprits. I’m waiting for the 10Q to come out to get more detail on the revenue split but I am inclined to give them one more quarter as the sales of non-boot items did quite well. I saw a few brokerage firms recommend buying on the dip which I thought might inspire some green on the name but no luck there. I’ll have a more complete comment out soon.
Best,
Linda
