Buy NXP Semiconductor (NSDQ: NXPI) and October Calls

Buy NXP Semiconductor (NSDQ: NXPI)

Target: $117

Buy Up To: $95

Options Trade: Buy to open the October 19, 2018 call on NXP Semiconductor (NSDQ: NXPI) with a strike price of $100 at $1.70 or lower. Symbol (NXPI181019C100)

RationaleAfter a tumultuous courtship with would-be acquirer Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM), NXP found itself deserted at the alter due to the Chinese government’s refusal to approve the deal. NXP’s draconian fall to the low 90’s level provides an excellent entry point for investors.

While NXP may not rush back to the $120 price coincident with the Qualcomm proposal, I believe the stock will regain ground in short order as buyers recognize its edge in the automotive, mobile payment, and security industries. The company is highly profitable and has lowered its debt levels significantly with its robust cash flow.

NXP is hosting an investor meeting on September 11 in NYC. This will be the company’s first public meeting since the death of the Qualcomm deal in July. With the distraction of the deal evaporating, I expect an acceleration in revenue and earnings growth.

It doesn’t look like this is going according to plan. Should we cut our losses now?

Hi linda, NXP semi was cut to sell today. What is your opinion on this option?

Linda McDonough

Linda McDonough

Hello all,
This is certainly not going according to plan. I’ve seen some of the details of the Sell which seem to focus on industry issues for basic semi chips. I’ve also read through much of the transcript from the analysts’ day to ferret out the negative pitch.
I honestly am shocked by the huge down move in the stock. Assumptions for earnings look conservative and much of the rest of the street supported the stock. That said, I’m looking at what level to put a stop-loss limit on the position.
A rough ride for sure.
Best,
Linda

Hi Linda,
I guess we hang on NXP as its already showing 98% loss for me? May be it will come back up to close with less loss?

Linda McDonough

Linda McDonough

Sadly yes. I have some calls out to my industry contacts to figure out what the heck is going on with this stock. Even the most ardent bears I know think this is a cheap stock. It’s possible it’s arbs selling but I thought they would have exited most of their stock a few weeks ago.
I’ll send along anything new I find.
Best,
Linda

Novice investor here and not sure what to do with major losses… now that a few of the options are almost worthless should I/ we wash our hands and move on or pray like hell for a positive change closer to expiration? I was trying to fight the panic of pulling out too soon but that would have been a wiser decision. Not placing blame on any suggestions, just looking for some damage control since I lack the experience.

Adam,
The problem with the options now is obviously that they are down so much, the risk/reward of holding them leans slightly towards holding on. I’m surprised at how hard all three traded down in reaction to BMW’s news. That company missed estimates due to higher emissions costs but clearly, investors are very nervous about the auto space (GM, CC, and NXPI are all somewhat tied to auto sales, GM more than the others by a wide margin).
I am considering instituting a hard sell alert on any options that are down 30-40% as a safe-guard on future trades. It is not often but always a possibilty that they go awry like this. It is extra unfortunate to happen just as you’ve come on board.
Best,
Linda

Nothing new Jeff except the continued selling in the semiconductor sector which bleeds into NXPI.

NXPI is expiring in 10 days with a negative theta. The $90 put is deep in the money and possibility of being assigned is high. I am punching out of the trade to mitigate max loss.

New member. Is NXPI still a buy candidate? If so which strike/expiration and price would you recommend?

Hello Linda,

I am a newby and have 3 contracts on the Oct 18 NXPI 100 Calls. Should I unload them? If yes how and for what price?

Thank you,
RJ

Linda McDonough

Linda McDonough

Hello all,
Even before the wipeout today, NXPI was nowhere near the $100 strike so with only one week until expiration, they are basically worthless. I am still astounded at the widespread, aggressive selling in anything auto and chip related. I’m seeing stocks selling at 5-year low P/Es. I don’t have a firm new option trade for NXPI but do think it will be significantly higher in 6 months.
Hopefully, this helps a bit.
Best,
Linda
