Fine Dining

Research is a big part of tracking down our best investment ideas. We spend innumerable hours reading trade publications, poring over companies’ conference calls and scrutinizing quarterly earnings reports. We also fritter away the hours monitoring macro trends in the global economy and markets. But winning investment ideas don’t occur in a vacuum. We often hit upon our best stock picks in a barroom or restaurant. A few drinks and a well-prepared meal provide an ideal opportunity to digest all of the information we’ve consumed and kick the tires on one another’s investment ideas.

5/3/11: The Monocle, Washington, DC

A Capitol Hill institution–look at the pictures in the dining room. Business was slow because Congress wasn’t in session. Bartender’s service and banter was excellent.

5/3/11: Charlie Palmer Steak, Washington, DC

Located on Capitol Hill and a haven for lobbyists. Seafood platter was disappointing, but steaks were impeccable. Limited wine list compared to the Las Vegas location.

6/7/11: The Country Club Steakhouse, Wynn Casino, Las Vegas

Spectacular view of the golf course–perfect place for a business lunch. Yiannis wolfed down the shrimp appetizer. Steak salad and charcoal-grilled sea bass were simple but well-prepared.

7/3/11: Balthazar Cafe and Restaurant, Beirut, Lebanon

Incredibly fresh food. Had the caprese salad. Yiannis enjoyed his chocolate eclair. You can order your meal in English, but waiters appreciate it if you at least give it a go in French.
