protection from sabotage

I read that there were acts of sabotage happening against the Dakota pipeline. That raises the question of whether pipelines in general are insured against sabotage. Are they, or will the respective operating company have to bear the cost of the damage and lost income?

Hi Peter,

Pipeline companies do generally have insurance for this sort of thing, primarily because their liability could be quite high in the event of a major disaster. I think as things settle down a bit over the pipeline, this sort of thing will die down. The pipeline is buried, so it’s not an easy target that someone could easily find in most cases. I would say it’s not a huge worry, especially given that the country has millions of miles of pipelines and this sort of things rarely if ever happens.
