Profiting From Private Ventures

The overarching theme at Breakthrough Tech Profits is profiting from disruption. That could be a company with a new technology that will rewrite the rules of an industry, or a company that’s remaking itself by grafting a new technology onto its existing business to leapfrog the competition.

We search for these stories because they so often yield surprise profits—and most analysts don’t count on disruption, though we’ve seen it pay off time and again.p1 graphic book cover

So we were excited to include, just this month, a brand new way for you to profit from disruption. You may have already read our report, “How to Invest in Three Private Hyper-Growth Companies That Could Make You Rich,” which is under the resources tab on the BTP page—just click on special reports.

This report is our primer for investing in private companies, and then cashing in when those companies are bought or go public. It’s the kind of investing the rich have taken advantage of for years through venture capital and private equity. But now small investors can get in on the action, too. When one of these companies hits, you can collect 10 to 15 times your original investment.

Our new analyst, Alex Pape, has scoured hundreds of these deals and come up with three that fit the BTP mold perfectly. They are tech companies—often low tech—but they’re all designed to shake up existing industries.

Take Keen Home, which now sells smart vents that fit over the heating vents in your home. These vents are remote controlled and save you money by adjusting those vents to heat rooms only when you need them heated. It’s the first of many products Keen is planning, and it delivers on the “smart home” concept that until now had been mainly fancy gizmos for people who like … fancy gizmos.

Then there’s The Naked Dog, which sells premium dog food and sounds like a mundane business. But as Alex says, it’s “Dollar Shave Club meets Purina,” in that it takes a traditional physical product, makes it great and then disrupts a traditional industry.

Finally, we recommend Traveling Spoon, my personal favorite. The travel industry is massive, but what gets lost in the hotels, planes, bus tours and cruise ships is genuine experiences where you meet, cook and hang out with the locals. Traveling Spoon sets up these meets, so you can make your own personal memories.

We’ll be providing continuing coverage of our recommendations, which starts in this issue, on page 7.

Hello Jim,
I found that the rules for foreign investors in private ventures are significantly different to conditions offered to US investors. It would be nice to include this aspect to the recommendations. The difference can be found only in the end of the process, just before the payment. The example is Traveling Spoon via Seed Invest. After registration and reservation I was asked to arrange the bank payment and then the message arrived, that the minimal investment to Traveling Spoon for foreign investors is 10000$, instead of 500$. I am afraid it will be similar for other opportunities, which will limit the number of such investments to me.
